Welding parameter optimization for welding API 5L X80 steel
Abstract
This paper reflects on the weldability of high strength pipeline steels. The goal of this paper is to establish optimum welding parameters, by choosing the suitable filler material, shielding gas and welding current, for achieving the best mechanical properties and to avoid specific discontinuities that can appear in the welding zone of those steels. The extent of the mechanical testing included measuring of the impact energy, hardness and analysis of macro samples regarding the weld bead geometry. Welding was conducted in laboratory conditions using a robotic welding cell. The welding samples were cut out and measurements were conducted for defining the optimum welding parameters area regarding the API 5L X80 steel.
